This is my story (and I'm sticking to it)
I'm a Marine Corps brat. My drill sergeant dad kept all five of us in line while my mom tried to keep all of us alive. I actually had a charmed childhood. My parents just celebrated 51 years together! I have been with my bride 18 years now and with a little help from God we may get to 51. I have been in radio for ** years. I have worked in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Texas and even made a side trip to Indiana. I spent a longggggggggggggg time in Lake Charles. I moved here from there. I love it here. Clear channel is a great company and all of the people here at Clear Channel Beaumont are my friends. We are like a big goofy family. Our staff meetings usually turn into laugh fest. It's amazing that we ever get anything done. Somehow we always do very well in the ratings. I have now broadcast through three hurricanes (Lilly, Rita and Humberto). I would do it again but hope I never have to. I hope to be here in Beaumont a very long time. I will never retire but I'd like to grow old here. Let's just not rush that growing old thing. Drop me a line or give me a call. I'd love to hear from you. I try to update my journal every day. It's great to read when you can't sleep. It will have you sawing logs in no time |

Was that rain?
Monday 10-06-2008 4:58pm CT
It actually rained today. I checked the forecast before heading for the gym this morning and saw the chance of rain in the forecast. Instead of chilling in the steam room and sauna I went home and covered the hole in my roof after my hour on the stair-master and elliptical machine. I also covered my firewood. I know it's not going to get cold enough for a fire anytime soon but I want my green wood to dry out. I really did not do much else yesterday. I washed my wife's car and that's really why it rained today. I got in trouble with my wife but she would kill me if I wrote about it here. LOL If mama ain't happy .... Well write me sometime at donrivers@clearchannel.com.
Haunted Hotel
Friday 10-03-2008 2:59pm CT
I am headed for more fun at The Haunted Hotel tonight. Put on your scary face and join me there so I can take your picture and post it here next week. I'll be taking some outside of the hotel and some inside when you least expect it! I'll be there from eight till ten tonight and I hope you'll stop and say hello ...or just scream. Tomorrow I'll be hangin' with my friends at Mike Smith Honda from two till four. The big news this week is that my brother has found an apartment. It's not easy finding a one bedroom apartment in this area now. He is signing the lease this afternoon. I've really enjoyed having him at my house. It has been thirty years since we have spent this much time together. I know he wants to have his own place and his own space. He's gotten in on the ground floor of the construction boom here and I think he'll do very well. His new palce is only about ten minutes from my house. I'm sure we'll still spend a lot of time together (when he's not working). If he is not working Sunday we'll go do some fishing. If he is working I'll probably go by myself. Write me sometime at donrivers@clearchannel.com.
Ramblins
Friday 10-03-2008 2:52pm CT
You know I try to post something here every day. Sometimes I wonder how columnist do it (find something to write about everyday). It is kind of like a first date everyday. I want to tell you enough to be interesting but not so much that you get turned off. Here is my boring story today.I'm going to the Wellness Center after work today to start working out again. My wife wanted me to show her how to target different parts of her body. I have not been getting up and going in the mornings since the hurricane. I have got to get back to my 5AM work outs. I feel so good when I start my day with a work out. The hard part is getting up at 4:30. It will be especially hard tomorrow because I know I will have to be at the Haunted Hotel until ten tomorrow night. Join me there starting at eight so I can take your picture and put it up here next week. I am into the new season of Survivor. I missed the first Amazing Race Episode last Sunday because my cable was out. I fell asleep last night while watching America's Got Talent. I have no idea who won ....lol. I was thinking about fishing this Sunday. I'd like to start on my home repairs but I'm waiting to see what my insurance and FEMA are going to pay for. Well that's what's happening in my exciting life (at least that's what I am going to talk about ...lol) Write me at donrivers@clearchannel.com.
I don't mean to sound harsh but ...
Wednesday 10-01-2008 3:19pm CT
I know that sometimes bad things happen to good people. I know sometimes good people need a hand to pick them up when they are down. I'm all in favor of helping those who help themselves. I'm not in favor of helping those who refuse to help themselves. I have seen this same guy standing on the corner begging for money for a couple of years now. He looks to be in his mid thirties and completely healthy. I went past him yesterday and not twenty feet from him was a sign asking for skilled or unskilled laborers. Our area is in an employment boom that was in full swing before Ike ever appeared. If you want to work .... you can find a job here. I've often wondered why these people don't want to work. Could it be easier to stand on a corner and let those who work support you? If I won the lottery I would give most of it away. I would start several charitable organizations and one of them would enable these people to find work. I would give them a place to stay and clean up. I would give them job skill training and help place them. I wonder how many of them would accept my help. I went by this same guy today and noticed he had knocked down the help wanted sign and was standing on it. It was like he does not anyone to see it. I would love to "teach him to fish". Another charity I would start is an organization to help kids get braces that can not afford them. A smile is a powerful thing and everyone should start life with a great smile. It's so important for self confidence. Ok ...I'll get off of my soap box now. I'll be at the Haunted Hotel this Friday night from 8-10 and at Mike Smith Nissan this Saturday from 2-4. I hope you'll stop by and say hi. Write me at donrivers@clearchannel.com.
What I did on my Ike half day off
Tuesday 09-30-2008 10:19am CT
As most of you know I stayed here and worked during and after Ike. I was getting burned to a crisp so I took yesterday off (except for the show). So here is my weekend story. I did a remote at the Haunted Hotel last Friday night and had a blast. I met so many great people! I'll be out there again this Friday night. Saturday morning I woke up and washed and waxed my wife's car. I tried a different wax and it did not work. It left a wet (almost greasy) coating on the car. I took the other car and my brother and I went to the McNeese State football game in Lake Charles. They completely blew out Southern Virginia. We left in the third quarter when the score was 63-0. Lamar should spend some time studying the McNeese program. They have a great tailgate party area and actually have parties going on for miles around the stadium. The entire city is behind the team. I Hope we can all get behind the Cardinals like that. I had press passes and the press box at Cowboy Stadium is pristine and very nice. It is very impressive. I woke up Sunday morning and put some different wax on my wife's car and then we went to mass. I watched the Saints game when we got home and then waxed and detailed my little car. yesterday I went to Houston in the morning to see and old friend then came home and decided to take my cable problems into my own hands. Ike left my cable hanging low where it crosses the street in front of my house. It was working fine but I was very scared that a tall truck would come flying down the road and take out the cable and even injure someone. I reported it but they must be dealing with thousands of reports. I even made a sign that said "low cable" to warn trucks driving by. Sunday morning they started clearing debris on my street so I went and warned them about the cable. It made no difference. My wife watched a truck zoom by and take out the cable. I talked to the truck driver later and he said that he had hit it before and nothing happened so he hit it again. This was not the brightest bulb in the chandelier! I went without phone, Internet and cable for the rest of the day Sunday and Monday morning and decided that I would have to fix it myself. I was waiting for a call from my insurance company about the whole in my roof and I can not be without my phone. I borrowed a ladder and went about putting some large hooks on the poles on both sides of the street. I then strung the cable and reconnected it using a splitter and two male ends and it worked. The problem was that my ladder was only about 14 feet tall so the line was still hanging low across the street. A neighbor from three doors down saw me working on it and came down to help. He had a much taller ladder so we moved the hooks way up on the poles and is fine now. I had never met this neighbor before but by helping he restored my faith in others. He did not have to help. He wanted to help. That's the kind of spirit that will carry us through the Ike recovery. And now you know the rest of the story ....LOL. Write me at donrivers@clearchannel.com.
